Turn Up the Mic: Publicity Triples Vesper’s Series B
Smart speakers are projected to be in 55 percent of U.S. households by 2022. As such, the components market for this tech boom is vast and fiercely competitive, with many companies jockeying for visibility. One company literally helps power the “voice” behind voice assistants like Alexa and Hey Google, working every day to make sure Alexa hears our commands.
A Boston startup that launched in 2014, Vesper develops the most advanced acoustic sensors – tiny piezoelectric MEMS microphones that power voice assistants like Alexa or Bixby. With some nice press traction on its heels, the time had come for the startup to announce its Series B round of funding. To make sure its Series B made a splash, Vesper tapped Hollywood to help make sure the media microphone was on.
Hollywood Agency crafted a media relations strategy aimed at generating buzz within the Boston innovation ecosystem, national tech and business press, venture capital community and within the core semiconductor trades as critical campaign components to meet the desired objective.
Key to the strategy was choosing a top publication to offer an exclusive to break the news: TechCrunch. With an exclusive target in place, the team created a robust media list of targets at national technology and business publications, within the sensors and engineering industry, and within the Boston-area innovation ecosystem. Targets that had written about startup funding, embedded hardware and the future of voice were identified and prioritized.
In addition to landing the TechCruch exclusive, Hollywood’s media relations efforts yielded tremendous results. In fact, 36 pieces of quality coverage yielded nearly 448 million total media impressions.
The onslaught of press coverage was tremendous. Yet what led up to the announcement was Hollywood’s biggest achievement: the funding round nearly tripled in size. CEO Matt Crowley remarked that many investors had called after reading about Vesper in news articles – the kind of ROI that PR dreams are made of. What’s more, after the funding announcement was made, an additional investor came knocking to participate in the round.
Now that’s the power of publicity.
